Calathea

Sold in 3.5" pots rooted plants or rhizome depending on availability

Dark green pleated ovate leaves adorn these beautiful and unusual plants. The bracts can range in shape from glistening beehive shape flower bracts to rattlesnake tail shape. Flowers are the most gorgeous of the marantaceae family. Truly a tropical wonder! Calatheas love heat and humidity and should be shaded from hot direct sunlight. They may be grown outdoors in the garden or as container specimens kept on the moist side and fed nutritional fertilizer, they will flourish and give you years of enjoyment. Rhizomes can be lifted in cold winter climates and stored. Easily grown tropical!

The striking beauty of calathea is unsurpassed in nobility, with its large corrugated paddle like leaves 2' long and 12" wide on a 4' to 6' plant which is the beautiful background for the forest green beehive shaped bract, soft to the touch with delicate yellow flowers emerging from within. Bracts and flowers last for weeks and make an excellent cut flower. Semi-root hardy, it makes a wonderful specimen in a large tub. Very exotic and easy to grow!

Another beauty in the calathea family is the pure iridescent white flower bract of the White Ice. A real beauty among tropicals, leaves are the same shape and growing requirements as Green Ice.

A beautiful Calathea with lavender pink bracts 8" to 10" above folige. A small plant with a height of 2' ft. its leaves are dark green with a lighter green mid-rib. Can be grown as a container or landscape plant that can be grown in partial shade. Hardy tempertures to the 30's.


Calathea Crotalifera (Red Rattleshaker)

Named because of its rattlesnake's rattler shaped bract. This calathea has interwoven bracts 5" to 10" long and 2" to 3" wide and is adorned with small white flowers that peek out throughout the bracts. The bracts appear midway on short stout stalks hidden amongst the lush green ribbed foliage 2' to 3' long and 1' wide, somewhat like banana leaves with a very intricate pattern! Semi-hardy. Height to 6'.

A miraculous variety collected in Venezuela, it's sculptured inflorescences is an amazing 12" to 18" tall, bract tips are a orangy-red with a emerald green translucent base emerging form it's sphere like bracts are small creamy yellow flowers. 4' to 5' tall it's heavily pleated paddle like leaves tower over it's spectacular inflorescences. Excellent as a cut flower lasting many weeks. Rare!
